He who robs his father or his mother and says,
Proverbs 28:24
‘It is not a transgression,”
is the companion of a man who destroys.
Chapter 28 of Proverbs is one of the contrasts chapters. The entire chapter is filled with the contrasts between a godly man or woman and an evil man or woman and Solomon wanted to make sure that he included a strong statement concerning the ill treatment of parents by their children.
I think our key verse for today definitely relates to the actual stealing of money or material resources by a child from their parent or parents. And, as Solomon also says, “There is nothing new under the sun.” Stealing from parents is as old, well, at least as old as Jacob! You can find this story in Genesis 25; a real-life soap opera with some unusual schemes and rituals. In this case the mom, Rebekah, colluded with Jacob, the son, to steal the blessing from Isaac, the dad, that should’ve gone to Esau, the elder brother. In ancient times, that was a very big deal and it was quite the complicated ruse.
In our day, we use different techniques and rituals to steal the wealth of our parents, but it is with the same age-old lust; greed! And this happens within every socio-economic class. The amount of wealth is not the issue. It is the amount of greed. Everything from stealing five bucks from mom’s purse to forging a signature for many thousands stems from the selfish and unquenchable lusts of the child.
And, our verse tells us that the stealing isn’t the worst part. The worst part is the attitude of the child believing that there is no fault in what they are doing. They convince themselves that they deserve the money or the house or the car or the five dollars and that their parents are just being stingy. I think this happens a lot more than we moms want to believe and it is so dreadfully hard for us to deal with if this is our situation. In the quest to be a friend to the child, especially a teen or an adult child. Moms can be the enabler rather than “lose” the friendship of the child.
This is much more complicated than I am trained or even smart enough to comment any further. I will just say that we moms must seek godly and righteous advice if this is the situation we find ourselves dealing with. Seeking godly professional assistance is a good and sound decision.
Proverbs 24:6
So, don’t go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many advisors. [NLT]
I may be taking this verse a bit out of context, but a mom is in a war if her child is or is trying to steal from her and she should not face this war alone!
