Heart Matters: Quite Contrary

A worthless person, a wicked man, is the one who walks with a perverse mouth, who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who points with his fingers; who with perversity in his heart continually devises evil, who spread strife.
Therefore, his calamity will come suddenly;
instantly he will be broken and there will be no healing.

Proverbs 6:12-14

I believe it important for us to look at the full context of this mention of ‘heart’ in Proverbs 6:14. The whole chapter is similar to the “Woes” Jesus gave to the Pharisees in the New Testament and it isn’t pretty. The first section in this chapter is a warning (Woe) given to sluggards. God does not look kindly on lazy people. The section immediately after our key verses for today is a terrible list of the seven things God hates. (We will discuss this tomorrow and you do not want to be on this list!) Then there is a reminder section provided of walking wisely and keeping God’s commandments to avoid the pitfalls of these ungodly and horrid behaviors. The chapter ends with warnings concerning sexual sins and the disastrous ramifications of flirting with and succumbing to sexual lusts.

Proverbs chapter six is a very clear declaration from God through Solomon giving us His holy consequences for deliberately rejecting His commands and directives, which are meant for our personal good and protection and also designed for the general good and flourishment of every culture in every time of history.

And, as we have already seen in these early days of Heart Matters; these deliberate acts rejecting God’s principles stem from what is happening deep within a person…deep within their hearts!

Look, again, at the verse quoted above. This is the classic antagonist in any novel, except it is in actual real life. The Bible uses the masculine pronouns, but we can easily see, and may even know a woman who fits this description perfectly.

She is a worthless person…a wicked person…she walks around with perversity in her every word. In fact, she is perverse (fraudulent, a counterfeit, we would say fake or ugly) in her very heart and devises evil. She is one who actually wakes up in the morning thinking how she can spread strife and ruin someone or even an entire group. Think cancel culture!

Who can she embarrass on social media and have it go viral? Who can she ‘troll’? Have you heard of this or seen it or been a victim of this on social media? It is rampant and so devasting to those who are being ‘trolled’. A troll is someone or several someones who deliberately go after a person on Facebook or Instagram or X or TikTok, etc…to demean them, embarrass them, charge them with a hate crime or racial slur or horrible habit or outrageous words. The troll doesn’t care whether it is true or not, they just want to ruin the person or group they are trolling. They are relentless. And they do it intentionally! Many of them are paid to do this! Can you imagine? Being paid to ruin someone’s life and none of what you say even has to be true!

We are truly living in an age of the perversity God warns against in this Proverb!

But be warned! This Proverb also gives the outcome of such persons…these trolls. They will face a calamity…they will be broken suddenly…and there will be no help!

God forbid, you or I should ever…ever think and behave in this way! May we think twice and three times and as many times as needed before we ever type any word of ugliness on social media declaring for all the cyber world to see and to know what really springs forth from our hearts!
